Published M.S. thesis research evaluated the uptake and accumulation of trichloroethylene
(TCE) and its metabolic products into fruit trees. Multi-year studies traced the movement of
TCE and 14C-TCE from the irrigation water to the soil and then to the branches, leaves and
fruits of trees grown in a controlled-environment greenhouse. A related project included
sampling for TCE emanating from the transpiration gas of trees at various TCE-impacted field
sites, and field sampling of fruits, leaves, and tree cores for TCE and its metabolites. These
projects required environmental sampling skills and the ability to follow EPA and/or other
technical guidelines and applicable QA/QC methodology. Data were used to complete a
toxicological
risk assessment for human exposure to TCE via edible fruit. Results were
presented at multiple international scientific conferences and published in refereed journals.
